Here is an account of a Fifth Year Students trip to see Macbeth in the Helix.

The Helix was packed to capacity when 4th years recently attended the heart-wrenching production of that most famous of Shakespeare’s plays, Macbeth. A cast of multi-talented actors from Second Age brought this thrilling drama to life under the skilful direction of Alan Stanford.

When we arrived at 12 o’ clock the place was teeming with students from other schools, with busy English teachers rushing around just like our own Ms Fitzgerald and Ms Dermody. When everyone had stuffed themselves we took the opportunity to have a peek at D.C.U……perhaps a future home for some of us!!! It was a warm welcoming place and some of us were mentally giving it number one spot on our C.A.O. form.

The Helix itself was surprisingly small and didn’t seem to be the same massive place that hosted “You’re a Star.” Our own Dunamaise would put it to shame. Our seats were in the front few rows which brought us right into the action-even if we did get a little wet in the process!

The performance itself was very powerful and the grey boulder-like props were ingeniously used. Over all the play had all the key ingredients of a modern day thriller – love, suspense, greed and murder.

It was a really enjoyable day with the only sour note being struck on the way home, when the ill-tempered bus driver refused to stop even though our bellies were falling out with the hunger. Trust Ms Dermody to give him a right earful – good on ya, Miss!
