Holocaust Survivor Visits St. Fergal's

On the 15th April 2008, the school was priviledged to have Mr. Zoltan Zinn Collis from County Kildare speak to Senior history & C.S.P.E. students. Zoltan gave a vivid personal account of his life from his early experiences in Slovakia through the horrors of the Nazi Concentration Camp at Bergen Belsen to his rescue and smuggling to Ireland by Doctor Bob Collis.

You could literally hear a pin drop in the room as the 60 students shared, with difficulty, the extraordinary personal experiences of Zoltan who was sent to Belsen with his family in 1944 at the age of four. Mr. Collis brought with him actual British Army footage of the thousands of bodies that were found at Belsen.

A big part of Secondary school Junior Cert level history, is the importance of eyewitness accounts. Zoltan's direct, straight and authentic style was found extremely accessible and priceless in terms of a Primary Source. The sheer fact that he kept over 60 teenagers totally silent and clinging to his every word gives just credit to his magnificant oratory and 'storytelling' skills. We were all priviledged to experience it first hand. After hearing the talk I would simply urge people to look for his published biography 'Final Witness' for this story can only be told in Zoltan's own words.

Congratulations to Mr. Quinn and his 3rd Year C.S.P.E. class for organising Zoltan's visit and to the students for their respectful attention.
