On 15/11/13 St. Fergal’s U14 Gaelic footballers travelled to Portlaoise to play in a round robin tournament to determine who should represent Laois in the Nth. Leinster Championships. Our opponents on the day were Clonaslee and Mountmellick.
The day kicked off with a game against Clonaslee. Fergal’s started off slowly and at half time found themselves 5 pts. In arrears, things looked dodgy for the Fergal’s boys but they plugged away manfully and with 2 mins to go found themselves just 2pts behind. Then a great move ended with Dylan Doyle crashing the ball to the Clonaslee net to give Fergal’s a last gasp victory.
The second game was against a very strong Mountmellick side who had easily disposed of Clonaslee in their first game. After just 5 minutes Fergal’s found themselves on the wrong end of a 1-3 to 0-0 score line against the physically dominant Mountmellick boys. However, as with the first game Fergal’s stuck to their task and at the half were just two pts.in arrears. A tremendous second half ebbed and flowed but at the final whistle Fergal’s had edged 2 pts in front for a great victory.
A tremendous day’s work by all the panel members with outstanding displays by Mark Hanlon, Diarmuid Conway, Chris Rafter and Dylan Doyle who finished with 3-7 over the two games.
