On Tuesday 20th of November, the newly formed U17 soccer team had its first training session. On Thursday 22nd of November they travelled to Kilcullen, Co. Kildare to play their opening game in the Midlands Junior League. The day was cold and wet with persisting showers that followed us to Kilcullen. The players warmed up, a quick pep talk was given and the game commenced. Kilcullen were quicker to settle and scored the first goal, they quickly followed up with a second to lead 2-0 in the opening thirty minutes. St. Fergal’s however did not let the margin get them down and the last ten minutes of the opening half was played with more determination and pride. The whistle blew, the rain stayed coming, another pep talk was given and the second half kicked off.
St. Fergal’s started to frustrate the other team, winning more ball and getting more passes through to the forwards. The break through came in the fiftieth minute when Shane Bowe (Captain) scored a great free, this was followed up ten minutes later with another Shane Bowe free from the same position. The score was tied at two a piece. The game was on, the cold and the rain did little to stop the enthusiastic roars from the side-line. Aidan Corby finally got through the defence and on the third attempt, with twelve minutes to go, he scored. The remaining minutes were frantic, and only for a brave bit defending and a goal keeper that refused to be beaten, St. Fergal’s won 3-2. Hopefully this is just the beginning of a good run.
