On 14th Jan. 2014 St. Fergal’s U-14 boys footballers travelled to Newbridge to play Longwood of Meath in the Nth. Leinster semi-final. The game was played in bitterly cold conditions though the pitch itself was in great condition.
As happened in the Laois final the Fergal’s boys were slow off the blocks and after 10 mins. were 1-3 to no score down. However they soon began to claw their way back into the game and a goal from Ben Delaney drew Fergal’s within 2 pts. at the break.
On the restart the Meath boys rattled off 1-3 without reply and Fergal’s were now really up against it. Again the boys dug in and led by Dylan Doyle, Diarmuid Conway, Darren Bowe and Chris Rafter they applied relentless pressure on their opponents to the very end . The gap was down to 3 pts. with 5 mins. left but a series of missed chances combined with desperate Longwood defending left the score line at the final whistle 3-8 to 3-5 to the Meath men. A great effort by the Laois lads.
