The first match of the league took place on Thursday 21st November, away to Athy. After reaching the final last year the pressure was on to do well this year. The facilities and pitch were brilliant, unfortunately so were their soccer team.
The match started will with missed chances for both sides and the St. Fergal’s defence worked very hard (with the Captain John O’Malley) in keeping Athy at bay. However our centre midfielder (Liam O’ Connell) received a straight red twenty five minutes into the match and was sent to the side line. Shortly after the sending off, Athy scored the first goal and seemed to be picking up momentum.
The score at half time was 1-0, but the players had to work extra hard with a man down. With the half time talk over it was time to start the second half. Some players were switched around to try and make up for being down a player, however Athy proved too strong. Despite the best efforts of St. Fergal’s they could not hold off a determined Athy side that broke through time and time again on goal.
The full time score finished up 6-0 to Athy. Hopefully we can improve and be ready for our next match at home against Portlaoise C.B.S. in early December.
